Collection: Mothman
The legend of Mothman began on November 12, 1966, when grave diggers in Clendenin, WV reported a large black figure flying overhead. Three days later, two young couples near the abandoned WWII-era West Virginia Ordnance Works encountered a 7' tall humanoid, with glowing red eyes and 10-foot wingspan. It chased their car, rising vertically while emitting a high-pitched screeching sound. This encounter was widely reported in local papers.
Dozens of additional sightings followed through 1967. The creature perched on rooftops, chased vehicles, lurked near homes, and was linked to pet disappearances. Witnesses described it as moth-like due to its wings and eyes, a name coined by the press.
The saga peaked with the Silver Bridge collapse in December of 1967. An overloaded suspension bridge over the Ohio River from Point Pleasant, WV, to Gallipolis, OH, failed during rush hour, killing 46 people and leaving two people missing.
Mothman's winged, humanoid like presence in the Appalachia region symbolizes mystery, omen, and tragedy.
